(Yorktown, New York): On Monday, July 23th, 1199SEIU announced their endorsement of Democrat Vedat Gashi for election to the New York State Assembly, representing the 94th Assembly District.

“We are proud to endorse Vedat Gashi  to represent the hardworking women and men of the 94th Assembly District. We believe Vedat will challenge the status quo and stand up to promote the values of the healthcare workers who serve on the front lines of New York’s healthcare institutions,” said Gabby Seay, Political Director of 1199SEIU. “1199SEIU is confident that healthcare workers across the State will be powerfully represented with Vedat Gashi as a member of the New York State Legislature.”

1199SEIU is the largest union in New York and the largest healthcare worker union in the nation, representing over 450,000 healthcare workers  along the East Coast.

“Healthcare workers are the lifeblood of our communities. Quality healthcare is a critical part of what makes New York State a leader in this nation, especially at a time when health care is under attack, particularly for women and the elderly,” said candidate Vedat Gashi. “If elected, it will be a priority of mine to work closely with organizations like 1199SEIU to ensure that New York remains a model for good jobs, quality healthcare and safe places for New Yorkers to raise their families.”

The 94th New York Assembly District includes both Westchester and Putnam Counties, encompassing the Towns of Carmel, Patterson, Putnam Valley, Somers, Southeast and Yorktown.

Vedat Gashi was born in Kosovo, in the former Yugoslavia, but grew up in Yorktown, graduating from Lakeland High School along with his four siblings. The Gashi family has lived in Yorktown for the past 29 years; he and three of his siblings still live in Yorktown, raising their children in the same communities and schools that they were raised in.  Vedat is running for office because he believes in putting the community’s interest before extreme partisanship and empty rhetoric.

Vedat received his Juris Doctor from Seton Hall University School of Law, and Bachelor of Arts degree from Connecticut College, where he was invited to serve on the Board of Trustees as a Young Alumni Trustee.  During his studies, Gashi interned with two of his heroes: Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, at the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, and Congressman Lee Hamilton on the House International Relations Committee.

After being admitted to the NY State Bar, Vedat went to work in Kosovo through the United Nations Development Program, helping rebuild the legal framework and political institutions of a country ravaged by war.  There he drafted numerous laws and helped establish democratic and representative institutions.

His experiences abroad made him especially appreciate the value of the United States’ strong democratic foundation. Upon returning home to Yorktown, Vedat followed in the footsteps of his family’s small business success by opening up his own small business, in the form of a legal practice.

Vedat lives and works in his hometown of Yorktown, with his wife, Vjosa, and their children, Leka (6) and Hana (4), who attend Yorktown public schools.  Vedat he has been active in his kids’ schools, sports, and scouting.  He is also an active member of the Rotary Club of Yorktown and the Yorktown Democratic Party where he serves as a Democratic District Leader.
